Bio
Howard was born in the north of England and raised by single mother Ciara Levitt. His father did not want to be involved in his upbringing and they never met. His mum met another man a few years later and they had a son, Stanley, when howard was three years old. Stan's dad became a father figure to Howard as well, but died when they were both still very young. Howard has a few vague memories of him, but Stan has none.
Howard was diagnosed as autistic around the same time his brother Stan was diagnosed with ADHD. Had he not been in that situation, he probably would have flown under the radar. He was always very withdrawn and used his words sparingly, but otherwise had a fairly average school experience, with average grades, except for in food tech, where he excelled. He kept the same friend group from primary school into secondary school. They were a well-liked and popular bunch, but he wasn't particularly close with any of them. Except for one girl, Carolyn, who he grew closer to over the years and they eventually started dating.
At 16, Howard went to a vocational college for professional cookery as it was the only thing he had any real interest in. He also got his first job as a supermarket assistant around this time.
Howard and Carolyn stayed together for around a year, at which point it dawned on Howard that although he genuinely cared for her, he was not attracted to her, nor had he ever been. Romance and sex had always felt performative to him, and it had left him feeling hollow for reasons he did not yet understand.
With help from his brother Stan, who was openly queer and up to date on all the labels, Howard came to learn that he was aromantic and asexual. Hell, he was probably agender too. He never really understood any of it.
At a similar time, a new employee, Andy, started working at the supermarket. Andy soon became the best friend Howard had ever made, and eventually they would become lifelong (queerplatonic) partners.
Howard and Andy spent some time renting a small student house while Andy was attending university, and they slowly saved to buy their first home.
Howard left his supermarket job and worked as a chef for a short time in a hellish toxic workplace, which almost put him off cooking as a career all together. However, he found a job at a small independent restaurant and eventually became the head chef there.
Nowadays, Howard and Andy enjoy a mainly uneventful and peaceful existence in their small terraced house somewhere in Yorkshire. They have two dogs, a jack russell mix called Basil, and a staffy mix (who I can't decide on a name for yet...)
Fun Facts
- Howard's interest in food and cooking started when he was young, and his younger brother was dealing with IBS that was made worse by several food intolerances. As well as this, his cousin Jamie would eat a very limited diet. Howard continues to experiment with ways to make food that works for everyone and extends this to designing menus at the restaurant where he works.
- Howard was on his secondary school's rugby team. He was pretty decent at it.
- He's also decent at drawing, and did surprisingly well in art at school. He doesn't take it seriously at all but sometimes likes to doodle for fun, and has a great time drawing and colouring with his niece Audrey.
- He's had a special interest in the spice girls ever since he was a kid in the 2000s. Love that for him!
